When people think of Wessex Internet, they often picture fibre cables, ploughs in fields, and shiny new broadband boxes appearing on rural roadsides. But behind every trench, map, and connection, there’s a team of passionate people who’ve made it happen.
As we celebrate 15 years of building connections and connecting 15,000 customers, we’re shining a light on the stories, personalities, and dedication that have built Wessex Internet from a local idea into a leading full fibre provider across Dorset, Somerset, Wiltshire, and Hampshire.
From a farmyard start-up to an almost 400-strong team
Back in 2010, a small team based on a Dorset farm took on what many thought was impossible – bringing fast, reliable internet to the countryside. With muddy boots, long days, and a lot of determination, the early crew laid the first kilometres of fibre by hand.
Today, that small team has grown into almost 400 people, spanning everything from field engineering and planning to customer care and community engagement. Yet the spirit that started it all – collaboration, hard work, and a genuine belief in improving rural life – remains exactly the same.
Stories from across the countryside
From build crews and planners to customer care and community teams, the heart of Wessex Internet is found in the people who bring our network to life every day. Here are some of their stories.
Adam – Rising through the ranks to lead connections
Adam began his Wessex Internet journey in Garden Works, helping customers prepare their homes and driveways for fibre installation. His talent and work ethic soon saw him step up as Garden Works Team Leader before moving on to head up Special Projects.
Today, Adam leads our Connections function, overseeing multiple build teams and ensuring customers across the region get connected quickly and seamlessly.
Ben – From customer support to representing Somerset communities
Ben began his journey in our Customer Support team, helping customers day in, day out with patience and a problem-solving mindset. But his people skills and passion for community soon shone through. Over time, he progressed into the Regional Engagement Manager role for Somerset, where he now works closely with parish councils, landowners, and residents to help bring full fibre to rural communities across the county.
Ali – From behind the camera to driving the mole plough
Ali started out as our cameraman and video editor, supporting the marketing team and even lending a hand with graphic design when needed. But in true Wessex Internet fashion, he embraced a completely new challenge, joining our build teams out in the field. Today, he operates the mole plough, one of the most efficient ways we bring fibre to rural homes. It’s a career change that proves just how many opportunities there are to grow, adapt, and thrive here.
Alex – Building an IT department from the ground up
When Alex joined as an IT Support Engineer, he replaced an external third-party provider and brought our IT expertise fully in-house for the first time. What started as a one-person team has now grown into a dedicated IT department of five, with Alex at the helm. Under his leadership, the team has also taken on system administration responsibilities, keeping our growing organisation secure, efficient, and supported every day.
Keeley – Growing from apprentice to finance lead
Keeley joined Wessex Internet as a Customer Support Apprentice, learning the ropes of helping customers and understanding how the business works behind the scenes. Her curiosity and talent for numbers soon led her into the Finance team, where she began studying for her AAT qualifications. Today, Keeley plays a vital role as the sole person responsible for Accounts Receivable, keeping the business running smoothly with her accuracy, organisation, and determination.
Alice – From sales to shaping multi-million-pound funding programmes
Alice joined Wessex Internet as a Sales Manager before moving into our Community Engagement team, where she played a key role in working directly with residents and helping new areas get connected. Her drive, leadership, and deep understanding of rural connectivity led her to take on an even bigger challenge. Today, Alice is our Head of Funding Programmes, steering large-scale investment projects that enable thousands of homes and businesses to access ultrafast full fibre.
Growing skills, growing futures
As we’ve expanded, so have the opportunities. Many of our staff have moved into new roles, switched departments, or begun apprenticeships within the company. We’re proud to invest in local talent – offering training, mentoring, and clear paths for growth.
We’ve seen apprentices become engineers, engineers become managers, and local recruits turn into regional leaders. It’s proof that you don’t have to move away from the countryside to build a meaningful career.
Looking ahead together
As we move into our next chapter – with 15,000 customers connected – it’s our people who will continue to make the difference.
Every email answered, every fibre spliced, every conversation at a village hall or farm gate – it all comes back to the people of Wessex Internet.
If you’re passionate about rural life, technology, and teamwork, maybe your story could be next.
