From 2Mbps to 100Mbps for community project leader
by The Wessex Internet Team
Introduction
In the world of community improvement, few stories can match the astounding speed achieved by Wessex Internet to connect Paul Williams, manager of the Big Yellow Bus Garden Project, to ultrafast broadband at his home in just a single day.
Background and Context
Before the arrival of ultrafast broadband, Paul faced significant and challenging communication issues, something those living in rural settings are all too familiar with. Sluggish internet speeds, substandard connectivity and the dreaded buffering all hindered Paul’s ability to effectively work from home.
The challenges were clear, and luckily the solution was on the horizon.
Challenges Faced
The Big Yellow Bus Garden Project, nestled in Shillingstone, Dorset was established six years ago. Run entirely by volunteers, it grows flowers and vegetables for the community.
Born from the vision of its founder, Paul, the project has evolved from its roots as a Skills Training Centre, initially aimed at helping young people by offering level one & two qualifications in various industries such as construction, mechanics, horticulture and more. Since then, it’s developed into a fantastic resource for everyone to enjoy. Its mission is clear: nurture mental health, promote sustainability, and involve the local community.
Paul’s home internet connection is vital to help support the work undertaken by the charity, and in his role as founder and manager. From engaging with the charity’s stakeholders, raising the online presence of the Big Yellow Bus Garden Project, to downloading training materials - a fast and robust internet connection is essential element to the charity’s ongoing success.
Step up…Wessex Internet
Wessex Internet swiftly addressed Paul’s connectivity needs. Time was of the essence due to the gardening calendar. In July, the Wessex Internet civils and garden team accomplished the (almost) impossible – connecting him to ultrafast broadband in a single day. This monumental leap has helped pave the way to even greater success for The Big Yellow Bus Garden Project.
The Power of ultrafast broadband
Paul, reflecting on the transformation, noted that the best thing about Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) was the speed. It enabled seamless online research and communication, empowering the project to expand its reach and impact.
We visited Paul at the charity and witnessed the volunteers putting down the tools for a coffee break, where they shared their diverse experiences and skills, showcasing the vibrant community that has grown around the project.
Paul told us they were currently in the midst of constructing a disabled-access classroom from scratch. Notably, they rely on volunteers who may not possess extensive construction skills, so platforms like YouTube have become instrumental in providing educational resources - e.g. hands on tutorials on gardening tips and DIY skills!
Paul uses his home internet connection to research and share information, hugely benefiting the construction process and contributing to the project’s ongoing success.
Testimonial from Paul Williams
Paul couldn't be more thrilled with his Wessex Internet connection - his heartfelt testimonial and a touching letter to the CEO confirm the positive impact of his connection. Let's hear directly from Paul as he shares share his experiences, challenges, and the many benefits of his ultrafast full fibre broadband connection:
