Our Fibre Optic network continues to expand on a daily basis. We currently have over 500km of cable buried across the Dorset, Somerset, Wiltshire & Hampshire countryside, used to connect up our 150 wireless masts providing super resilient connections and serving over 300 customers with direct Fibre-To-The-Home/Premises connections.
Our community fibre schemes are designed for villages, hamlets and areas where traditional copper cables (provided by Openreach) perform poorly due to the long distances from BT’s green cabinets, or where our wireless broadband proves difficult to implement due to a lack of line of sight.
Fibre to the home – Gigabit vouchers
The government’s Department of Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) are currently providing grants to small businesses and their surrounding residents to fund installations of Fibre-To-The-Home in the form of a “Gigabit Voucher”. As a preferred partner, Wessex Internet are implementing schemes to provide ultrafast, future-proofed Fibre Optic Broadband to many areas across our coverage region. What is the Gigabit Voucher Scheme?
Full fibre broadband connections offer the fastest and most reliable speeds available, and the government has committed to a vision of a full fibre Britain. As part of this commitment in March 2018 they announced a £67m Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme.
Gigabit vouchers can be used by small businesses and the local communities surrounding them to contribute to the installation cost of a gigabit capable connection. Businesses can claim up to £3,000 against the cost of connection either individually or as part of a group project. Residents can benefit from the scheme as part of a group project which also includes businesses and can claim for a voucher of the value of £500
Why do we think this is such a great opportunity?
Until now, if you’ve wanted ultra-fast internet, your luck has been at the mercy of an enormous government procurement plan. If your nearest cabinet missed the list, then tough; you were left in the digital dark ages! This voucher puts your upgrade in your hands. Act now and you can get an FTTP connection with faster internet than you’ve ever dreamed of. If you are close enough to our extensive network or have enough people to justify a new expansion, then you can make use of this grant.
Aren’t government grant schemes like this complicated to apply for?
The department of Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) have worked very hard to make this “micro” grant as easy for businesses and residents as possible. As a result, we deal with all of the hassle on your behalf. Just accept our quote, confirm your identity with DCMS by email and we do the rest!
BT have installed Fibre in my area, but my service still isn’t great! Why is this any different?
Unless BT have told you they are installing “FTTP” to your address, then you’ll likely have ‘fibre to the cabinet’. In real terms, this means you still have a copper wire from that cabinet into your home. In the countryside that is usually strung along poles ’round the houses’ and under trees, by the time it gets to you, the fibre stuck in the cabinet doesn’t always make much difference. Either way, it will never do more than around 80Mb/s, less than a 1/10th of the speed our Gigabit FTTP service is capable of
So, how will the Wessex Internet voucher process actually work?
In short, you register your interest, we send you a quote, we apply for your voucher on your behalf and then install your service. Once we have applied for your voucher, we need to have enough vouchers in your area to cover the cost of your deployment. We will add your grant to the pot for your local scheme, and, as soon as we reach the signup threshold for community, we will start the planning phase and installation.
Am I committed to taking Wessex Internet service after the install?
You will be required to sign up to one of our 100Mb/s+ services for at least 12 months to be eligible for the voucher. However, our install won’t remove your existing BT line so after that you would theoretically be free to go back to another provider on your BT line if you ever wanted to, although we doubt you’ll want to!
How quickly will I get connected?
We are required to connect you within 12 months of being awarded a voucher; however, we obviously expect to connect most people much quicker than that. It does entirely depend on what other vouchers are required for your install and how far you are from our network. Once you’ve submitted your enquiry we will let you know.

An extremely good service from first contact through to installation, quick and efficient. The speeds are so much quicker than the old broadband, programmes are ready to watch before I’ve sat down again and when doing boring things like VAT returns, it doesn’t keep cutting out and I have to reconnect. My only gripe is that it doesn’t reach all round the house but I can live with that.
