What is wireless broadband?

Whilst we’d say full fibre is the best possible broadband you can get, unfortunately it’s not available everywhere yet.

We’re committed to building a full fibre network that connects and serves even the most remote countryside communities - while we’re doing that, in some of the areas we haven’t reached yet, we’re proud to offer superfast wireless broadband as a fast and reliable alternative.

How does it work?

While most broadband is delivered by cables - either fibre-optic or copper phonelines - wireless broadband is delivered through the air to your house using radio waves.

We have a network of 150 wireless masts throughout the countryside beaming a signal to our customers.

If we can see your property from one of our masts, with no buildings, trees or hills in the way to block the signal, it means you can get superfast broadband with download speeds of up to 50Mbps wirelessly. All we’d need to do is install a small dish (no bigger than a satellite TV dish) on your house to pick up the signal.

Who can get wireless broadband?

Your home or office needs to be within about five miles of one of our wireless masts, but most importantly we need to have what is called a clear line of sight to your property. That means no buildings, trees, hills or other obstructions in the way as all of these block the signal.

If you live in a listed building or conservation area, you’ll need to seek permission from the relevant planning authorities before we can install your wireless connection. If you don’t live in a conservation area or have a listed building you are able to install up to two dishes on your building.
